Water Filter Facts and FAQs

The process of “End of Life” testing on Microbiological Water Purifiers is a bit much to take in at first glance. We hope these water filter facts and FAQs will help clarify what Aqua Veritas is all about. If you still have questions, please feel free to email us to Info@aquaveritas.org.

  • What are Microbiological Water Purifiers?

Microbiological Water Purifiers are generally used in small portable water filter applications, such as water bottles, backpack bladders, drip systems and filter straws.

  • What standards qualify them to be known as Microbiological Water Purifiers?

As set forth by the EPA and supported by a federal trade commission decision a unit, in order to be called a micro biological water purifier must remove, kill or an activate all types of disease causing microorganisms from the water, Including bacteria viruses and protozoan cysts so as to render the processed water safe for drinking therefore to qualify a microbiological water purifier must treat or remove all types of challenge organisms to the most specific standards.

  • What are the EPA Standards for Microbiological Water Purifiers?

For Microbiological Water Purifier devices to be effective and keep your family safe and healthy they must meet or exceed established EPA Water Quality Standards for the removal of:

99.9999% of Bacteria
99.99% of Virus
99.9% Cryptosporidium / Giardia

  • What is  log reduction?

Log Reduction is used to measure the removal rate of contaminants.  “Log reduction” is a mathematical term used to show the relative number of live microbes eliminated from a surface by disinfecting or cleaning.

Log Reduction stands for a 10-fold (one decimal) or 90% reduction in numbers of live bacteria.

1-Log Reduction would reduce the number of bacteria 90%. This means, for example, that 100 bacteria would be reduced to 10, or 10 reduced to 1.

  • What does the term CFU mean?

CFU’s are Colony forming units. Each one is a cell of micro organisms.

  • What does “EPA” stand for?

EPA is the abbreviation for the United State Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Is there a charge for manufacturers to list their products on the Aqua Veritas site?
